What to gather for your tax return.
A general list of the documents most people need. Once we're working together, you'll get a checklist built for your situation.
Everyone
- Last year's federal and Virginia tax returns
- W-2s from every employer
- 1099s for interest, dividends, brokerage accounts, and retirement distributions
- Form 1098 if you pay a mortgage
- Records of charitable gifts
- Form 1095-A if you bought health insurance through the Marketplace
- Records of any estimated tax payments you made
If you have a side business or freelance income
- Income records, including any 1099-NEC or 1099-K forms
- Business expense records
- Vehicle mileage or home-office details, if you use them
If you own rental property
- Rent received and expenses for each property
- Closing statements for any property bought or sold
- Property tax and mortgage interest statements
If you receive a K-1
- Each Schedule K-1 from a partnership, S corporation, or trust — these often arrive in March or later
For S corporations and partnerships
- Last year's business return
- Year-end bank and credit card statements
- Profit and loss statement and balance sheet, or access to your books
- Payroll reports for the year (S corporations)
- Each partner's contributions and distributions (partnerships)
- Major purchases, asset sales, loans, or ownership changes
